Created reading lists of books that projected positive, realistic images of African Americans that inspire authors and artists to create original works of Children's fiction out of the black experience.


English Language Arts

  • Explain storytelling as oral communication
  • Have students choose books from the Augusta Baker Collection at the University of South Carolina Rare Book Collections catalog. http://www.libsci.sc.edu/histories/oralhistory/bakerpage.htm
  • Have students construct their own stories to retell to a group and introduce the element of the dramatic.


Social Studies

  • Introduce the West African "Griot" or storyteller. Explain the significance of storytelling as a method of recording history.
  • Have students identify the history that is referenced in fictional stories.
